Education

Alexander Technique is an educational process in which students learn to improve their psycho-physical coordination, attention to task-specific goals, and increase their general well-being. The Alexander Technique also improves coordination and reactivity to stimuli, encouraging individuals to find more natural, inherent human movement.

Very young children move their bodies well and have a balanced attention throughout their activities. Beginning around the age of five, children begin to develop habitual, idiosyncratic, and unconscious movement and thought patterns as a result of their reaction to their environment and its stresses. These maladaptive habits do not serve them well and left unchecked, they may accumulate and translate into pain and mobility issues later in life. Furthermore, poor coordination and mental engagement in children reduces learning potential in skilled activities and hinders developmental progress and growth.

The educational process of rediscovering the natural poise and coordination innate to young children requires students to become aware of their unconscious habits and to learn to apply Alexander Technique principles, with the assistance of an Alexander Technique teacher.

This specialized education is available to explore at any point in time in an individual’s life. However, the earlier it is taught, the easier it is to undo habits and apply to everyday activities.

In an ideal world, children would be taught Alexander Technique as part of an expanded educational curriculum that encourages a healthy response to the environment. Such an education would open their future and allow them to reach their full potential while proactively preventing common maladies and injuries typically associated with the aging process. Alexander Technique is an effective preventative model in maintaining optimal health and functioning.
