Breathing

The importance of breathing well has many applications from improving speech and singing, managing stress and health, to maximizing athletics and performance arts.

While traditional concepts around breath often focus on diaphragmatic action, Alexander Technique teachers may highlight the importance of free movement of the ribs and how poor habits of balance and unnecessary torso tension restrict breath potential. Research demonstrates how a series of Alexander Technique lessons improves maximal expiratory pressure and peak expiratory flow without exercises (Austin & Ausubel, 1992).

Students are often surprised by the unique Alexander Technique approach to breathing and how it forgoes contrived or specific exercises. Lessons establish an appropriate and responsive muscular tone throughout the neck and torso, which then facilitates natural breathing processes. Students develop a nuanced understanding of their breathing patterns and how to change them constructively for their health and daily activities.

Change involves carrying out an activity against the habit of life.

Coordination Quality in Breathing

I felt fortunate to have found my Alexander Technique teacher. I had previously considered myself as someone who had a good awareness of my body. However, my teacher took this awareness to a completely different level. His ability to identify even the most subtle of shifts in the body is something I had never seen before. His blend of practical and theoretical teachings formed the basis for me to reduce tension, improve breath quality and overall move in a more ergonomic manner. After struggling with a weak and restricted voice for years, I have made significant improvements towards improving my voice quality since working with my teacher and I would highly recommend him to anyone seeking to learn the Alexander Technique.
