Alexander Technique is an excellent tool for those who want to combat the effects of stress in their lives.
It is commonly accepted that chronic stress can be debilitating physically, mentally, and emotionally and can significantly increase the risk of disease. Often individuals will turn to mindfulness practices to ease their stress.
The necessary quiet attention and consideration that Alexander Technique requires offers a counter to stress because it promotes the opposite physiological response that stress induces. Instead of a fight or flight response, Alexander Technique has a calming, centering effect, lowering blood pressure and pulse rate. Unnecessary muscular tension is diminished and breathing tends to deepen and slow down naturally when individuals engage with the Technique.
When students are fully present and engaged with Alexander Technique their stress is lowered. The Alexandrian principles of awareness and inhibition can assist those who want to change their habitual reactions to their environment. From a more grounded place, individuals can sometimes achieve a greater clarity and understanding of their stress, respond differently to challenges they face, and find greater poise and sense of well-being.
“You translate everything, whether physical, mental or spiritual, into muscular tension.”

Touching Presence
While I initially approached the Alexander Technique for years of chronic back pain, AT lessons allowed me to realize that my tension was an expression of my stress. For me, practicing the Alexander Technique has been instrumental in eliminating pain and discovering inner peace.
