“We can throw away the habit of a lifetime in a few minutes if we use our brains.” – F.M. Alexander”
Poor postural habits gained over a period of years in response to stress and life events eventually can cause discomfort, chronic pain, or injuries, and affect quality of life. There is an incorrect assumption made by many that stiffness or aches and pains are just part of the aging process and therefore something to be accepted and managed.
Since people do not often pay attention to how they actually use their bodies in everyday activities, they do not realize that their harmful habits cause misalignment, compression, and pain.
Alexander Technique helps individuals to recognize how they misuse themselves and improve the quality of their movements. They become much freer and lighter, and their bodies become more integrated, balanced, and expansive. The ability of the Technique to positively influence the thinking and movement of individuals creates a wonderful opportunity for fundamental change and improved emotional well-being.

The Alexander Technique gives us all the things we have been looking for in a system of physical education: relief from strain due to the maladjustment and consequent improvement in physical and mental health and along with this a heightening of consciousness on all levels. We cannot ask more from any system; nor, if we seriously desire to alter human beings in a desirable direction, can we ask any less.

I had been taking Alexander lessons for quite a while when I sprained my ankle quite badly – it was very swollen and quite discoloured. I was not sure that the Technique could help my pain, but I hobbled to my lesson hoping something could be done. I spent the entire lesson on the table. I’ll never forget when I took my first steps off the table – I had zero pain! I couldn’t believe it! It was only then that I appreciated how much I was contributing to the pain by tightening not only my injured ankle, but my entire body.
